چکیده

Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out in a systematic manner to develop a coarse grain model for multiple-of-three carbon n-alkanes. The procedure involves optimizing harmonic bond and bend parameters, and Lennard-Jones nonbonded parameters, to match observables taken from fully atomistic simulations and from experiment. The experimental values used consist of surface tension and bulk density data. Scaling relations are introduced to allow for the representation of the remaining n-alkanes. As n increases these relations converge to the multiple-of-three carbon values. The model is assessed by comparing it to both fully atomistic simulation and experimental data which was not used in the fitting procedure. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1607955#

Surface Tension Prediction of n-Alkanes by a Modified Peng-Robinson Equation of State Using the Density Functional Theory

Through this study, the ability of a modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) equation of state in predicting the surface tension of n-alkanes based on the density functional theory approach was investigated and compared with other studies. The interfacial layer thickness and the density profile were calculated simultaneously at different temperatures from triple point to near critical point using the modi...

Surface tensions of linear and branched alkanes from Monte Carlo simulations using the anisotropic united atom model.

The anisotropic united atoms (AUA4) model has been used for linear and branched alkanes to predict the surface tension as a function of temperature by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulations are carried out for n-alkanes ( n-C5, n-C6, n-C7, and n-C10) and for two branched C7 isomers (2,3-dimethylpentane and 2,4-dimethylpentane). Different operational expressions of the surface tension using both t...

Surface tension of pure heavy n - alkanes : a corresponding states approach

The surface tension of heavy n-alkanes is a poorly studied subject. Few data exist and the predictive methods used for their estimation are rather complex or show considerable errors for the higher members of the series. In this work, the corresponding states theory is used to predict the surface tension of the series of the n-alkanes. Two approaches have been followed: the first is a second-or...

Generalized relation between surface tension and viscosity: a study on pure and mixed n-alkanes

A generalized relation is presented to correlate liquid–vapor surface tension with viscosity, both for pure compounds and mixtures. Plots of different data sets verify that the natural logarithm of the surface tension is linear with the reciprocal viscosity, with slope-dependent on the molecular weight and constant intercept for n-alkanes with chain length greater than n-C10H22. For these, the ...

Coarse-grained potential models for phenyl-based molecules: I. Parametrization using experimental data.

A coarse-grained intermolecular potential has been parametrized for phenyl-based molecules. The parametrization was accomplished by fitting to experimental thermodynamic data. Specifically, the intermolecular potentials, which were based on Lennard-Jones functional forms, were parametrized and validated using experimental surface tension, density, and partitioning data. This approach has been u...
